Hair Transplants

Over the past few years, the interest over hair implants has increased considerably since 2 of 3 men and one every 5 women suffer from hair loss. In men, heredity is the main cause while in women the main causes are hormonal alterations such as menopause.

Today, the market offers a variety of hair implant techniques. Still, we must say that surgery cannot help all those people whose baldness is total. For the candidate to be eligible he or she must have some healthy hair on the sides and the back of the head since that hair will be like donors for the grafts.

The intervention

After a detailed study of your baldness pattern conducted by a surgeon, you will be informed on everything there is to know about the surgery, the technique to be used and the results to be expected. The procedure is based on moving a strip of the scalp from the back of the head of the patient. Such part does not present DHT receptors, reason why it is permanent and the hair does not fall. From there, you get the micro-grafts (1-3 hair units) that will be implanted in the bald areas.

Local anesthesia is applied, and it is an outpatient procedure, that is, the patient goes home the same day. The results are permanent since the implanted hair belongs to the patient in question. The postoperative period care is very simple. The patient may experience a mild discomfort, but he/she will go back to normal very soon. One thing you must remember is that it will take 3-4 interventions to obtain optimum results, always depending on your baldness level.

Complications related to hair transplant methods

Among the possible complications associated to hair transplants, these are the most common ones:

Rejection of the transplanted grafts

Every now and then, the transplanted graft is rejected by our body (the same way it happens with transplants of different organs). In this case, we must turn to surgery to start the process all over again.

Scarring or hemorrhages

Scars and hemorrhages are a very common thing in this type of implants, as a result of the strong tension the scalp is subject to during surgery because of the methods used to reduce it.

Uneven hair growth

In some cases the hair that has just be transplanted may start growing uneven, especially if implanted near a strip of very thin hair or with very little hair (this can usually be corrected with additional surgery).

Infections and swelling

As it happens with any other surgical procedure, there is a risk of possible infections and swelling.
